The point of diminishing returns explains why higher-end chips like AM5, priced between $150 and $250, offer less incremental benefit compared to lower-cost options. Beyond a certain point, the performance gains become minimal relative to the cost.

The only exceptions are a handful of motherboards. Focus on the I/O and capabilities you need. A well-rounded 9800X3D setup shouldn’t cost more than $1000.

Imagine gazing into your crystal ball to see the future of PCIe devices—what kinds pop up over the next decade will reveal the hardware needs you’ll require.

I assembled my PC in 2021 and plan to wait until AM6, likely around 2028. Over the past four years I've kept my setup unchanged—no new PCIe cards added. Recently I installed a graphics card and a USB 3.0 expansion card with five rear ports. Looking ahead three to five years, I don’t expect major upgrades. Traditionally I relied on solid-state drives, Wi-Fi adapters, USB expansion, and faster Ethernet; most of these are x1 devices, often just PCIe 2.0, rarely needing 3.0 or 4.0. Adding two extra full-length Gen 3 slots at x1 speed would suffice for me. I prefer extra M.2 slots for more storage rather than more expansion ports. What slot configuration are you considering?

The GIGABYTE B850 GAMING WIFI6 is budget-friendly and includes an X4 port. There are no widely reported problems with this model.

Discussing my older computer from ten years ago, it was still working well despite being paid under a thousand dollars. It seems high-end boards aren’t providing much value now. The ASROCK B850 Pro-A is worth considering for similar needs.

I explored loslesscaling and the dual GPU setup—it requires an x4 slot for optimal performance. Guess we’re all aware of hardware details in this community!

Excellent setup. Ready for next-gen AMD processors if you decide to upgrade later. Strong power delivery with four M.2 slots—though the first one is Gen 3 2.5Gb LAN. At this stage, no one can compare anything older than ten years. Current events like the pandemic, inflation, tariffs, and the Ukraine war are all impacting things. Focus on the top GPU available right now.

It's a bit odd to think about asrock when dependability matters... for PCI, that’s actually quite an unnecessary rule today. Most PCI gadgets just shut down your GPU completely, offering no real protection against the future. You shouldn’t be hoping for that and definitely don’t need it.

We understand a lot together, but we don’t all have the ability to read minds. For future needs, please clarify your requirements. If you’d mentioned something like “I need at least an x4 slot to use a second GPU for lossless scaling,” it would have been much clearer for everyone.
