Advice for Migrating to SSD
Advice for Migrating to SSD
Hi everyone, I've got a 256GB SSD paired with my 1TB WD Blue HDD. When I get around to it, I plan to transfer my operating system and main games to the SSD. I'm still figuring out the best way to do this. I've read about cloning the HDD's data onto the SSD, but I have around 600GB on the HDD which won't fit on the SSD. My current idea is to first install the OS on the SSD and then move files in as I go. I have a few questions: 1. If I perform a clean OS installation on the SSD, do I need to re-enter my product key? I'm not sure where my W7 disk is and I'd prefer not to search through it if possible. 2. Regarding drivers – will I need to reinstall them? I'm just trying to avoid extra effort. 3. For games and other programs, when I move the ones I want to the SSD (probably just games), do I have to reinstall them or can I simply transfer them? This might be tricky for some heavily modified titles if I end up with a full reinstall. I'm new to this before; previously, moving from my iMac with Bootcamp to my gaming PC meant a complete wipe and reinstall because of all the unnecessary files. Now I want to keep what I have and just shift some stuff over. Thanks in advance for your advice.
For future reference, if you require a product key, Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder is an option. The rest of this article isn’t helpful since I haven’t upgraded to an SSD before—I’ve only done clean installs or clones. EDIT: It turns out I was thinking you could use EaseUS Todo Backup Manager instead. For more details, check the Lifehacker article where it’s explained clearly. Basically, you copy data to an external drive that doesn’t fit on the new system, then erase the original and clone the rest onto the SSD.
Performing a clean Windows installation means you must install all components. If you move forward, ensure you back up all crucial data. Remove files like music, games, movies, etc., or store them on an external drive. Retain only essential files, documents, user settings, and folders—until your hard drive reaches around 200GB. Then copy the contents to an SSD.
