Advice for boosting performance in Windows shared folders
Hey there! I'm just getting started with all this tech stuff. I built my PC for storing files and don’t plan on streaming much. My setup includes a Plex server for backup, but mainly for archives. When moving files from my laptop to the HTPC over Wi-Fi, I’m stuck at about 2.5MB/s. That’s slow compared to what I need. My router and desktop can only handle up to 10/100 Mbps. I’m wondering if upgrading anything would help reach USB speeds. Also, if I switch my network card to a gigabit one and keep the router at 10/100, would that still be too slow when transferring files via Ethernet?
Upgrading to a Gigabit switch allows both devices to connect seamlessly, maintaining network performance without issues elsewhere. Alternatively, you might switch your router to Gigabit, add another router as a switch or Wi-Fi access point, or install a dedicated WiFi access point with multiple Gigabit ports—this can boost your wireless speed as well. If your laptop’s chipset isn’t up to 802.11ac, you’ll need to upgrade that too. In the end, using a Gigabit switch remains the most economical and efficient choice.
