In the msconfig interface on Windows 8 (and 7) under the Boot section with Advanced settings, you navigate via win+r → msconfig → Boot → Advanced Options. There’s an option named Number of processors that shows a dropdown with processor counts. By default it’s set to auto, but I’m experiencing problems and might need to adjust it. I’m curious about its purpose and behavior—seems the internet doesn’t provide clear guidance. Does it factor in hyperthreading as separate units? What effect does lowering the number have? As far as I understand, you can only disable hyperthreading in the BIOS, while turning off physical cores would be even more drastic. So, what happens if you select a value lower than your default? (In my case, if HT is enabled, it should default to 8; otherwise, 4 cores with 8 threads?) As a side note, I’m dealing with mouse stutter/skipping on Windows 8.1 64-bit, not just in games. This issue was reported online before, and changing the processor count to 8 resolved the problem. It’s quite strange. I’ve already restarted multiple times without improvement. I haven’t made any other changes or installed updates. This is really puzzling.
