I record in 1080p yet aim for a 4K output. I understand adjusting project settings to 4K, but would it simply double pixels or apply proper antialiasing for smoothness? Are there any third-party tools or plugins you recommend? The alternative I know involves purchasing Adobe Creative Cloud and buying a plugin from Red Giant, though I prefer avoiding recurring costs with my current software.

I'm not familiar with this. I'm currently on the Premiere boat using Red Giant's Instant4K. Switching seems worthwhile. You might try the trial versions of both, though I'm not certain.

I'm hesitant about paying for editing tools because I already have FCPX. The costs add up quickly—$100 for Instant4K and $20 each month for Premiere. I checked some tips on using compound clips, but I think I'll give those a shot right away...
