Adjusting the i7-5820k to run at 4.4 GHz with 1.17 Voltage
Hi,
I’ve decided to push my CPU overclock further. Previous attempts at 4.4 and 4.5 led to temperatures exceeding 80°C. Now I’m running at 4.4 GHz with 1.17 Voltage. After a ten-minute stability check using AIDA64, the overall temperature is around 71°C. Individual cores show readings of 79°C for Core #1, 78°C for Core #2, 81°C for Core #3, and 78°C for Core #4. So far, I think I’ve found my sweet spot.
I also tried running Battlefield 1 at 1440p with Ultra graphics (currently using a Strix 1080). During the game, my CPU hit 81°C after about five minutes, but it would vary and settle back down to the 70s. That seems typical? Should I try a slightly lower overclock next time?
I don’t have a water cooler; I’m using a SilenX EFZ-120H air cooler.

BeauSmith tried 4.35ghz for curiosity, but on modern processors voltage appears before temperature usually. He corrected himself to 4.4 GHz and 1.17 Voltage.
Increase the clock speed slightly.
Run it until it stops, then lower it back down to below 80 cores or maintain around 80 c during a full workload.
Also consider cleaning the case and possibly adding more fans.
Increase the clock speed slightly. Run it until it stops, then lower it down to under 80c or keep it at 80c during an hour of heavy use. Also consider cleaning out your case and possibly adding more fans. Okay! What about my current temperatures compared to when I'm playing normally?
Don't play around during stress tests, use the heaven benchmark to achieve consistent outcomes.
Prime 95**** Benchmark Heaven is utilized for evaluating GPU performance. I neglected to consider it earlier!
BeauSmith suggests using heaven benchmark for consistent results instead of stress testing. He shares his experience with Unigine at 4.5 crashing but notes it finished properly at 4.4, producing very small differences compared to the base clock. He also mentions not stress testing during Battlefield 1 and the temperature reaching 81°C once.
It seems like you're considering upgrading your setup. You might want to look into a more efficient CPU cooler. Your current configuration can be seen here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cnrn9W
