Hello! I’d like to clarify some points about RAM speeds. I have an ASUS B360-F Gaming paired with an Intel i5 8400, and I’ve checked the specifications on two sites. Intel says the maximum RAM speed is DDR4-2666, while Asus lists a maximum of 64GB at 2666/2400/2133 MHz. They also mention support for XMP profiles. What does this really mean? Can I install a dual 8GB kit running at 3600MHz if I enable XMP?

The XMP-Speed represents the highest speed the processor can handle. For your setup, this would be 2666 MHz unless adjusted. The standard non-XMP-Speed typically ranges at 2133 MHz or less.

When purchasing a RAM module like the 4000Mhz version, installation typically runs at a lower frequency such as 2133Mhz. XMP/DOCP settings can push it up to 4000Mhz. On Intel's site, "supported memory" means the CPU will function properly if the RAM operates within its rated speed range. For example, with a Ryzen 3 1200 processor, using 3200Mhz RAM works fine without issues. The recommended speeds can vary, so it's wise to check compatibility before buying.

It means you can use any RAM speed you like as long as the motherboard supports XMP, though performance may drop with higher speeds. What are your thoughts on what AppleFreak mentioned?

Its true... supported is often much lower than what XMP can do... you should see supported as basically guaranteed it can reach that, higher may or may not work. also depends on the ram and you should make sure its on the qvl of the board (qualified vendor list, it will list all ram sticks that are tested and guaranteed to work with the board, at at least "supported" speeds) edit: ok , see post below, i didn't know this doesn't apply to older intels, so 2666 it is...

Nevertheless, Intel had a different approach. It wasn't until the 10th or 11th generation they permitted XMP/DDRAM overclocking beyond specifications on non-Z series motherboards. For Intel 8th Gen models, you were restricted to the maximum supported levels by B-series and H-series boards. AMD offered more flexibility, allowing users to apply XMP/DOCP settings and push the CPU further on B-series platforms. The A-series boards didn't permit any overclocking, not even with XMP or DOCP beyond the CPU's rated limits. AMD's A320 and A520 models mirrored Intel's B/H series before the 10th/11th Gen. You could still turn on XMP, but only up to DDR4-2666. Some memory kits support the DDR4-2666 XMP profile. The JEDEC speed standard for DDR4 is DDR4-2133. With an i5-9400 and B360 setup, you wouldn't be able to exceed DDR4-2666, even if you used a kit rated for XMP DDR4-3600. EDIT: It was the 500-series chipset (such as B560, corresponding to the 10th and 11th Gen) that finally enabled Intel to support XMP memory overclocking on non-Z series boards.
