I'm just using an H110i GTX for my FX-8350 and I'm wondering if I can reach about 5 ghz with a 970 chipset or if upgrading is necessary.

Overclocking performance depends more on the quality of the VRM section in the motherboard than the chipset itself. Running at 5GHz on the 8350 is similar to installing the FX 9590, so only motherboards that meet the power needs of the FX 9590 can offer a real chance of success. We're looking at power outputs above 200 Watts.
