Adjusting performance on an Intel Core i7 7700k at 4.2ghz
Consider how you approach overclocking your i7. Begin by increasing to 5ghz and run stress tests, or try smaller steps for better stability. Regarding temperature, a reading of 81°C under maximum load at 4.2ghz seems normal for your setup. Your H80i is positioned on the back of your carbide 540; check if that placement is ideal or if moving it to the top of your case would help.

Have you looked into OCing at all?
I’ve done a bit of it. I understand how to overclock, but I haven’t overclocked a CPU before. My only GPU overclock was with EVGA Precision.
Researching CPU OC is important—know the temperatures, what to monitor. The guidelines are there for good reason because they consolidate valuable information in one place and have been updated over time. Any advice you get will miss something key; that’s what could help avoid failure.

The CPU is already reaching 81c under maximum load on stock, which is quite high. I’d suggest starting with a 4.8ghz first, setting the manual voltage to 1.235, and adjusting up or down while monitoring temperatures. You might also consider upgrading to a larger water cooler.
