I've been considering boosting my processor speed to improve gaming performance. I'm curious about the optimal settings and voltages for overclocking my current setup. PSU: 1000W, GPU: RTX 2060 MOBO, Power Supply: Gigabyte x470 Ultra Gaming.

It's okay to play around by yourself; it can be quite enjoyable. Don't anticipate higher FPS than you already get. Your CPU is already quite powerful, so overclocking might just highlight the need for a more capable GPU to avoid performance issues... If your system has solid cooling, enable Precision Boost Override and it should handle the rest.

It's worth noting, though, that a 16-thread CPU with at least 3.5GHz performance isn't affected by these changes. Also, you're absolutely right.

I see your point, but the gap between stock and overclocked builds is huge across all aspects. Even with a modest 1700 base, the performance leap can be significant—often by a wide margin during rendering. When engines are limited to a fixed thread count, it doesn’t matter how powerful your hardware is. Many games rely on just one core, particularly the poorly coded ones.

For Ryzen builds, I boost all cores to stock boost settings and keep voltages unchanged unless benchmarks show instability. If that fails, raise the voltage. Then test at 4.2ghz with 1.4vCore and tweak from there. Ultimately, it depends on the specific motherboard’s adjustable settings.

Regarding cooling, even a 240mm AIO won’t suffice for my 1700 setup. @Hanzie82, check out the comparison between stock and overclocked builds—it really highlights the differences.

When Ryzen launched, WoW hadn't fully optimized for multi-threaded CPUs yet (though it's only marginally improved now), and many players upgraded their older i5/i7 models to Ryzen 1700 series. While these chips added cores, each one was significantly slower, leading to complaints about reduced performance in raids and PvP. The 1700 typically runs between 3.2-3.4ghz, and boosting it to 3.7-3.8ghz can noticeably improve raid FPS and mass combat effectiveness, which often depended on a single network thread feeding the GPU. I wouldn't say a 16 thread CPU with at least 3.5ghz isn't affected by these changes. The 1700 does face challenges in certain situations, similar to a 9900k, but every bit of CPU speed still matters.

Everything seems fine, but my 1700X handles it easily in real life. Still, from what I see, we won’t be using the silicon lotery. That’s not something anyone should take seriously. My friend has a 1700X with a 240mm AIO and he easily reaches 3.8Ghz, while I’m managing 4Ghz in real time (Scythe Ninja 5). (The first Ryzen CPU series isn’t the fastest single-core, but it still outperforms most others.) I’m looking for a title that maintains maximum cores for over a minute. I haven’t seen such games before. I’ve played countless titles, and honestly, many are poorly coded—who wants to play those? Overclocking isn’t as difficult as it once was. 1.) It doesn't work at my usual settings, 100% certain. 2.) That’s a solid benchmark (measuring performance). No matter if it's air or liquid, reaching thermal balance while staying within safe limits is key. 3.) For a top-tier single-core experience with high graphics, I’m thinking of Everquest 2. I’ve posted screen recordings from the past week on my wall, just joking about it. Sorry if you don’t get the full picture of overclocking benefits on the first-gen Ryzen. I see big improvements from boosting CPU speed, RAM frequency (3600MHz is my sweet spot for stability), and then clock speeds—based on all my tests. Regardless, I disagree with your initial view and can back it up with results once I’m back home tonight. EDIT - I actually have evidence. Just check my stats—since I’ve got similar setups, one is overclocked and the other isn’t. That proves it!
