Adjusting drive speeds and understanding the issue Slower driving rates, and figuring out why they happen
Hey there! I've been searching online for solutions but found mostly negative feedback and low ratings. My setup includes a SanDisk Extreme Pro 55AF (second generation) that works with USB Gen3.2 2x2, reaching about 20 GBps. However, when using Windows, I only manage around 38 MBps—no matter which cable I use, including the one that came with me, it doesn’t perform well. My M1 MacBook Air handles speeds much better.
I initially thought the issue was related to switching to exFAT for cross-platform use, but even in NTFS, I’m stuck at 38 MBps. Now I’m exploring other possibilities. Here’s what I have: an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X on Windows 11 Home, MSI XPG X570 Gaming Plus (details: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-X570-GAMING-PLUS), BIOS updated to the latest version. I’ve used up to four 8GB sticks of XPG problematic pluses, but they often crash unless I stick to the base clock at 2444 MHz (though it was advertised up to 5400).
I also have an EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3090 with Gigabyte Wi-Fi 6E and a PCIe card. The drives tested are:
- C Drive
- CT500P2SSD8 500GB
- D Drive – SanDisk Ultra 3D NVMe 1TB (SDSSDH3N-1T00)
- External SanDisk Extreme Pro 55AF (Gen2, 3.2 2x2) 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00)
My motherboard has several USB ports on the back: two USB-A 2.0, two USB-A 3.2 Gen1, one USB-A 3.2 Gen2, one USB-C 3.2 Gen2, and two USB-A 3.2 Gen1. My internal drives are working as expected, but the connected devices consistently hit around 36–42 MBps.
I’ve attached screenshots from ATTO and Crystal Disk Mark. All ports show up as supporting SuperSpeed (AMD USB 3.10), but they don’t register properly—showing either slow or standard speeds. I checked the BIOS for updates, confirmed it’s current, and tried disabling xHCI in BIOS without success. Changing OC settings or toggling A-XMP didn’t help either.
Anyone have insights? Could there be an issue with Windows? Thanks!
