Hello, I attempted to lower the voltage on my i5 processor. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5, model A515-55, and I have an MX 350 graphics card. Since both are cooled by the same heat pipe, high temperatures cause significant performance loss. I changed the thermal paste, which improved things slightly, but I’m unsure if others have had success with this approach. I tried throttling stop, but my FIVR became locked. I managed to install the latest BIOS from Acer, but it didn’t resolve the issue. I also attempted to modify the BIOS IRF images, though loading failed. I was able to install Intel XTU, but it still shows an error about missing drivers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can optimize my system for better performance. Thanks!
For low power chipsets the choice depends on your needs. Intel shines for gaming with its 11th gen CPUs, while Ryzen 5 4500U handles I5 tasks efficiently without extra power draw. The Intel XTU no longer backs Intel's low-power G and U lines. When ThrottleStop indicates a locked state, you can't adjust the voltage. The BIOS has already locked the setting. You must change the BIOS to remove that restriction.
I initially considered getting an AMD processor, specifically a Ryzen 5 4500U. I checked benchmarks and AMD’s performance against Intel, but it wasn’t available. The only choice left was an Intel chip. Thank you for the resources, any help would be appreciated.
I understand it doesn't support XTU, but I've seen people attempt workarounds online. The best option seems to be adjusting the BIOS settings. I tried but might have made a mistake. Have you explored previous releases of XTU? Many features aren’t available on newer versions, yet older builds function perfectly if you go back to something like 5.something. Locate the earliest release compatible with your CPU model—it might be just what you need!
I also attempted the previous release, I'm not certain which one it was, but I might try a few more older versions. My main issue seems to be that it's locked in the BIOS settings. If I adjust that, I could risk undervolting over Throttlestop, at least I believe so.
I've use XTU on Haswell platforms with locked BIOS plenty, but maybe something is different now. I'm sorry I don't have experience with 10th gen stuff just yet. If you can find release notes that chronicle older versions you can find the version that first supports your CPU and try that one or some after it till you hit the most stable version that still works.
