I'm experiencing issues with my online gaming where ping suddenly jumps to very high values, sometimes reaching hundreds. My setup uses Wi-Fi without a wired connection, and I'm trying to figure out what's causing this spike. The hardware I have includes an ASUS network card, a TP-Link modem, and an ASUS router. Have you considered using power line adapters? They let you connect directly without needing an Ethernet cable from your router to your device.

It's likely the issue lies with your router, as the RT-N12 is a very basic wireless B/G/N device without AC power. It probably handles only simple tasks like web browsing, social media, and email. To verify, disconnect the router and test your internet connection through the modem directly using an Ethernet cable. This isolates the problem to the network hardware. If the connection remains weak, contact your ISP. If it works, try connecting your computer directly to the router via Ethernet, then retest. Adjusting WiFi channels or widening them on your ASUS router may help if wireless performance is still lacking. If improvements occur, you've identified the optimal channel. If not, consider upgrading to a more powerful router like the TP-Link Archer C7 or Netgear R7000.
