Adjust CPU performance settings to restrict boost capabilities
I recently bought a Legion Pro 5 laptop equipped with a Ryzen 7 7745HX processor. At first, the CPU operated much hotter than desired when using aggressive performance boost mode. I turned off boost in the power settings, and the machine ran cooler but still felt like it was underperforming. If boost is turned back on, the CPU can jump from 3.6 GHz to 5.1 GHz, causing temperatures to spike significantly. Considering the laptop’s sensitivity and temperature fluctuations, I’m hesitant about manually adjusting BIOS settings or overclocking. I’m hoping to maintain a stable 4 GHz core speed while keeping temperatures below 70°C during workloads. My concern is finding a way to cap the CPU frequency at 4 GHz without reaching 5.1 GHz, since the boost settings don’t seem to respect that limit. I’ve explored options like throttle stop or AMD Ryzen Master, but I’m not very familiar with them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The Ryzen 7000 series is built to operate at peak performance until it hits 95°C, which remains safely below its maximum limits. At that point it automatically adjusts to maintain stability. This approach has been consistent for years, just like Nvidia has done before. Aim for a temperature around 83°C and allow the GPU to boost naturally until then—just let it run as intended without worrying about overheating.
You're questioning whether a CPU speed limit could be set to prevent it from exceeding 100 GHz.
