Hey everyone, I just switched to a Ryzen 7 5800x but kept using my old cooler (Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4). Back then I had a Ryzen 7 1800x that worked great with it. I assumed the jump in TDP from 1800x to 5800x wouldn't cause issues since the cooler supports up to 129W and the TDP is only 10W higher. But now I’m seeing idle temps around 55-60°C, and even light tasks like OneDrive push it past 70°C, which also makes the fan spin loudly. The rest of my setup looks fine: CPU, cooler, GPU, case, and fans are all in place. I cleaned the heat sink and fan, tried swapping panels for better airflow, adjusted fan curves, and even replaced the thermal paste from Arctic. The original Noctua cooler still performs well, so I’m not planning a change just yet. I’m hoping you have some tips on why this is happening or ways to lower the heat and noise without replacing the cooler right away.
I have identical CPU units, and it appears they heat up a lot, even with a 360mm AIO. When idle, it stays around 40-45°C while using Chrome and Discord. Once you start demanding more power, it jumps to 55-65°C. Cinebench R23 reached 90°C in under half a minute. I’ve also heard the 5800X is among the hottest in the 5000 series. You might want to test a cooler with a Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, but other than that, it’s unclear what else to try. You could verify if your cooler is properly secured—though I suspect it’s not the main issue.
I think we should reapply the paste, making sure the heatsink is properly placed. The temperatures I see on my 5600X with the standard cooler are normal, though they’re a bit higher than expected.
I'm testing this now but haven't noticed much improvement yet... So far, the temperature hasn't dropped noticeably. I've already applied it a couple of times after using the new Arctic thermal paste and made sure it spread evenly and thinly. I'm not sure if I can get the heat sink closer without damaging it, though I'll give it another try.
Same motherboard you own, but I upgraded to a 5950x. It also worked with the older 80C models when I first set up my PC. I fixed the issue by moving from an AIO to a Noctua DH-15, adding plenty of Noctua fans—especially the NF-A12x25—which perform really well and let me customize airflow. Now I run at 40c idle and never reach 80c anymore; the top I’ve seen is around 70%. My next cooling upgrade will be a Kryonaut to swap in for the MX4, which I usually use.
