I have sufficient understanding to assemble a computer, but I think that's about it for this topic. That’s why I’m here. I’m seeking guidance regarding RAM. Let me start by clearing my mind. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI (MS-7C94) (AM4) GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 64gb Corsair (4x16) DDR4 3200mhz Vengeance LPX Ram CMK32GX4M2E3200C16 3 hdd 1 ssd. I built this machine a few years back, and upgrades have been gradual. To be honest, it still amazes me how smoothly everything has worked until the latest RAM sticks were added. After installing them, performance has become less consistent than before. I attempted to match the exact specs of the original sticks, but after checking the BIOS, there are minor discrepancies. Instability isn’t severe—just occasional unexpected restarts without clear cause. It’s concerning because I’m unsure if this affects long-term reliability or hardware lifespan. When they restarted right after installation, I noticed variations in MHz in the BIOS. I decided to bring both to similar speeds (set to 2800mhz) as a starting point. Since then, it’s mostly been sporadic crashes. I haven’t made any further changes. I saved a screenshot of the RAM details in Speccy. If anyone needs more information, feel free to share. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
They're better suited for Ryzen systems. I'm using the CL16 DDR4-3200 in my 5900X and it's causing issues. I'm considering overclocking to boost performance, but the speeds seem off. Do you have EDOC or XMP support? Updated May 29, 2022 by An0maly_76
Not familiar with EDOC. XMP seems active. I retrieved another image from the BIOS. Yes, I considered selling all four and using the proceeds for two 32g sticks. She never faced issues running two sticks. I initially purchased the two because they were the most affordable choice... I upgraded the motherboard to switch to Ryzen and only realized later that my RAM wasn’t sufficient.
Uncertain if two sticks really help beyond four, but Crucial Ballistix is built to maximize a Ryzen's performance. There might be cheaper options, though they come with higher costs. I prefer value for money. A 2x16 Ballistix CL16 DDR4-3200 set costs around $115-$128 and offers the best return on investment for RAM paired with a Ryzen.
After checking YouTube about the "2 or 4 sticks" discussion, I’m starting to believe it might just come down to switching brands of RAM. It looks like getting four sticks of Ballistix should be manageable. Go Straya! It’ll be a bit tricky selling and swapping things over until I have a computer, though.
You have four sticks, but are they from one set or two separate sets of two? If it's the latter, you might not be able to use XMP settings. You could adjust memory timings or lower speed temporarily. Keep in mind that single kits ensure compatibility at rated speeds, while mixed kits aren't tested together. Also note that running four sticks becomes more challenging for the memory controller during overclocking (XMP).
Alright! So, I just thought I'd try changing the ram slots around and after not being able to even get the computer to show me a picture on the monitor a few times and a mild amount of freak out, I think I figured out why they're acting so strange together... They're identical on the barcode, apart from one difference... Two say: "16-18-18-36 1.35V ver 5.32" Other two: "16-20-20-38 1.35V ver 3.43" Doy. Yeah. Two different kits. I have resolved to sell and try to get a matching kit. Thanks for the advice.
Corsair's RAM compatibility with Ryzen isn't great, especially on your setup.
The part numbers vary between 2E and 2Z, which is why experts suggest using a complete set for Ryzen. It seems important to stick with a kit rather than mixing different numbers, especially when pairing with Corsair RAM. Wouldn't it be better to ensure matching timings, including subtimings? Personally, I'd prefer one kit with two sticks, but in theory that should be fine.
