I've been working on repairing a non-functional Asus H270 Pro motherboard. Someone suggested the BIOS chip might be faulty. After taking it out and testing it, nothing came up. I had a backup but burned the pads with excessive heat, so now I'm trying to modify the BIOS header (JDIP) to SOP8. Maybe someone smart could create a PCB design I can order from PCBway.
I’m aware of the issue and kept increasing the temperature. I’m also familiar with soldering lead-free wire. The spacing on the JSPI is 2.0mm, while typical adapters for BIOS programmers like my Ch341A use 2.54mm, which means the jumper wire would form a poor connection and cause problems. If I used PCB design software, I’d like to create an adapter board so I could solder the new BIOS chip directly onto the JSPI header.
Curious about those holes on my ch341a adapter board. I didn’t realize the SPI header could serve as pads for the BIOS chip. What if the SPI headers act as a slot for the BIOS chip using an adapter? Could I simply solder a female end of a Dupont jumper wire onto the adapter and have a removable BIOS chip? After soldering the BIOS onto the adapter, I could just plug in a male-to-male adapter when I want to flash it. This would be super handy for my frequent bios crossflashing experiments.
Using dupoint wire on a chip results in a very poor connection that will eventually fail. If the connection gets pinched or the case shifts, troubleshooting becomes difficult. Additionally, the header layout differs from standard SPI configurations.
I noticed you were aiming for a better approach after reviewing it again. The simplest way to fix a faulty flash on an Asus board is using the recovery CD that came with it. Insert it into a reader and even if the BIOS isn't working, the board should boot. Go to BIOS recovery and flash the original factory firmware back onto the device. This method is quite old—this is the top recommendation in Asus's BIOS recovery guides. Trying this seems excessive for just a basic fix. To be honest, flash chips rarely fail like this. I'm sharing this from someone who has tested many processors with altered BIOSes. If the board looks damaged now, it might be time to replace it and move on.
