The PC was upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10, with the CPU and memory replaced. The system is now unactivated, and Microsoft couldn’t locate it during recovery attempts. It isn’t showing up on the Microsoft account either. If you switch back to the original hardware, can you still activate it? I’m concerned about losing the key if I can somehow retrieve it.

It seems unclear, but generally the free upgrade turns your license into an OEM key. Just double-check with the official source for confirmation.

Check if your device supports Windows 8 and follow the steps to move to Windows 10.

The license is no longer valid. It was enhanced automatically during the free upgrade phase.

Old systems usually come with a COA label. Upgrading doesn’t automatically change them to OEM parts. Whether it was sold new or used doesn’t matter—same applies here. It seems like the hardware is still from the original build.
