Hello, I'm planning to assemble a new custom PC and was considering purchasing a Windows 10 license. I already own a Dell G3 3579 and wondered if I could use its product key or upgrade Windows 10 Home on this laptop for a more affordable option. Using the Pro key for the build seems tempting, but I'm unsure if it would actually work.

Ebay offers items for $10 or less. Completed quickly. Keys typically connect to the motherboard, though they can also link to your account. For convenience, it's better to purchase a fresh dedicated key for your PC. Straightforward, cost-effective.

I didn’t want it to be an OEM build because I intend to use this PC for professional tasks.

Retail keys cost significantly more, around $200 USD for a Pro retail key. OEM keys are typically offered to system integrators such as Dell. These keys usually connect to the motherboard, while Microsoft does not provide technical support for them—Dell handles that instead, which is why they’re cheaper. I’ve also seen people contacting Microsoft to transfer an OEM key to a different machine, which seems to be quite a coincidence. Both Home and Pro licenses should be available as OEM products. What @Dedayog means isn’t about OEM versus retail, but about a Grey Market key. These might have originated in countries with lower living standards, so Microsoft sets prices accordingly. Currently, an OEM key on Amazon or Newegg is still priced above $80 USD. The main drawback of a grey market key is the risk of it being blacklisted, requiring a new purchase.

I've received around four from Ebay and another pair from scdkey.com. No problems in the past five years or more. It's up to you, but most of us recommend the same. However, if you really want the Microsoft version, I'd keep the laptop as it is and purchase a Pro key for the PC.

I might choose the straightforward option instead, as I don’t feel the need to take chances. The Amazon links seem unreliable based on reviews, and buying on eBay could cost more due to shipping fees than the item’s value, making it impractical.

You can purchase it online or install it directly via Windows after setup. Choosing the fully Microsoft option is available.

The keys arrive electronically. No physical delivery required. You’ll receive an email containing the details. If needed, you can always use an Ebay key and purchase a more expensive one if necessary. *shrug* Saving $200 could fund upgrades for your new workstation.
