Looking for assistance with activating Windows 7 on an older laptop? The product key might be lost, and your recovery partition is damaged. Check the HP support page for guidance: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02643009

When reinstalling Windows on the identical laptop, the BIOS must be updated so the system recognizes it during installation.

I might be mistaken but I believed only Windows 8 and newer versions began saving the key onboard. You could be forced to purchase a replacement. There are websites offering them for $20 to $40. I’ve had some success with Kinguin, though I must say the whole process seems a bit untrustworthy so YMMV... If you haven’t already erased the drive, there are methods to retrieve the key. Running Belark advisor will indicate otherwise; other tools can examine the registry on the drive to locate it.

This situation isn't helpful on Windows 7 because license keys weren't embedded in the BIOS until Windows 8 arrived, and the user mentioned the sticker is gone. To fix the issue, you'd need to connect directly to the operating system to get the product key. However, if the OS was still running from the original installation, any key obtained through tools would be invalid since OEMs use pre-activated copies that can't be used for new installs.

As mentioned earlier, for Windows 7 you’ll need a key. Make sure you’ve saved it before reinstalling with MagicJellyBean or similar tools. Alternatively, using a sticker could be another way. There might still be some keys available on eBay, but otherwise it’s tough.
