Hello. After nearly ten years I came back to AMD CPUs. I purchased a 5950X. My motherboard is an Aorus X570 Xtreme with the newest BIOS. Exactly, out of the box the processor hits around 4.7/4.8GHz when I test it randomly in CPUz, but the speed fluctuates each second, and I saw it report 5GHz at one point. I think this is the default "Auto Boost" setting? The Windows boot time reaches temperatures between 75 and 82°C, then after about 10 to 15 seconds it drops to around 45 to 50°C. But when I change the CPU clock ratio multiplier in the BIOS to something like 44, the system runs smoothly with temps near 35°C idle and 55 to 62°C under load. However, I can't adjust the multiplier to 47 or 48—it crashes and loops during preboot if I go above 44. Why can't I set it higher than 44 even though it claims to reach those speeds? It seems confusing. I haven’t altered the voltage, possibly because they auto-select from Auto Boost. Is this typical? Shouldn’t I be able to tweak the core clock multiplier beyond 44? Do I really need to manually adjust many settings to match advertised performance while using Auto Boost? Also, I used Ryzen Master and set the speed above 4.4, but it immediately shuts down or crashes. Could this indicate a quality issue? Maybe the chip isn’t of high grade or there’s insufficient testing. I bought this sealed unit, so I’m unsure. Could you share advice for similar CPUs like the 5900X and others? Thanks. The component is performing just as expected. When you load stock, it reaches 4.9/5Ghz. However, if you manually adjust settings, it no longer matches the advertised specifications. To consistently achieve 4.9Ghz across all cores, you’ll likely need to tweak the voltage slightly, hoping your cooling system can handle it.

Hey everyone, thanks for the update. Everything checks out as expected. Wizardy, just a quick test with cpuz and cinebench—AIDA too. A bit of extra heat is normal when using auto boost. Around 8% usage at about 55°C (roughly 80°C on Windows startup), room temp hovers between 19-20°C. It’s a bit odd; when I set the multiplier to 44, temps stay under 36 during idle and around 55-60 during heavy load—good range. I swapped out my cooler fans for RGB models, but I won’t see much improvement until I get a better one with more airflow. Sadly, Noctua doesn’t make RGB industrial fans unless I tweak them, which removes features like Corsairs’ RGB strip. I still use Noctua fans for bench tables and occasionally cool SLI cards between runs. Those are the best I’ve ever had, though some people dislike RGB fans. The black design helps, but I’m hoping for an H115i Elite Capellix. For now, my OCD and Aspergers make me stick with multiplier 44 because of the temps. I prefer cooler temps.

Hello, Small update. When PC is set to Auto boost it can achieve rated speed according to few monitor tools but very rarely. Cinebench r23 score is around 27200/27500ish (little less than some testing shown). During cinebench, speed will never go higher than 4.6 max when is set to auto. Even with override enabled. Another issue is "idle" workload. On idle with only Chrome/Discord/and coretemp including (icue) for my cooler it uses barely a 1% of resources but temperatures varies from around 48 to 52 celsius and voltage used during idle is 1.46/1.47 even when using less than 1ghz to 3ish ghz. So now I am wondering, why it uses such voltage when speed is at its lowest when idling (auto boost enabled). pretty sure the temps would be lower if this crappy voltage wasnt an issue. I did disable cool n quiet but same stuff. Note, when I manually set CPU to 4.5 and 1.2V the temperatures on idle are 37ish. So no idea what is wrong with it. I did arrange a replacement when its in stock just to be safe. But not quite sure what the problem is.

It's typical behavior for AMD's Zen2 and later designs. Slightly varying idle temperatures are expected. Short bursts of maximum performance on one core are normal, as are reduced boosts across all cores. Higher overall temperatures with a 16-core processor are within the standard range.

This is kind of an "up to" thing, also people often misunderstand how it works, cpu will maybe boost to the advertised clock under light load - but under heavy load it won't because temps, power don't allow it. So tldr: you got what was advertised, just not what you expected, and fiddling around with cpu settings rarely improves things, if you want higher clocks you need to overclock all cores and have appropriate hardware (aka very expensive 'high end' especially motherboard and cooling, also psu)
