Achieving 99°C during moderate gaming is challenging and depends on your system's cooling efficiency.
Hello everyone, here’s the updated hwinfo after 30 minutes of CS2 at 1080p high resolution. I noticed some thermal throttling during gameplay, so I wanted to monitor temperatures. My setup includes a Ryzen 9 7900X with 9800x3d graphics, a Lian Li Galahad 240 CPU, and two 120mm gray noctua fans (one exhaust, one intake). The Fractal Design North case is mounted top and side. I’m transitioning from a Ryzen 9 7900X and am curious—does this setup behave the same as before? Could cooling be the problem? Early in the session I achieved 500fps, but later drops to around 240fps. Someone please help identify any potential issues. Thanks!
Up to 95-96 degrees is typical, causing thermal throttling. Which cooler would work best and what about the fan performance?
The 9800X3D performs much like the 7900X under full loads, reaching 95°C consistently. The stacked 3D Cache in the X3D CPU makes it a bit more challenging to manage heat. Anticipate temperatures near 95°C during peak usage. While 95°C is normal at 100% CPU load, experiencing it during CS2 indicates cooling issues—likely related to the cooling system.
Right now, I'm adjusting the font size to twice its current level, which makes it hard to see the details. The main problem seems to be using a 240mm AIO with a fan that doesn't perform well—an air cooler would be a better choice, like a PA 120.
It depends on the setup, but having an additional exhaust shouldn't hurt performance. A 240mm AIO is similar to a tower cooler in efficiency.
The Lian Li Galahad 240 suits the 9800X3D well for gaming tasks. I mainly run it at 30% fan speed with a DeepCool AK620, which handles even demanding games like Hell Let Loose. It should perform similarly on the 7900x, and power usage during games will likely be comparable—slightly lower on the 9800X3D. Have you verified your thermal paste, mounting force, and pump speed?
Would you consider doing anything as it is or if you put it in exhaust? No, not for a while. Tower coolers have really improved over the past 2-3 years, getting very close to 360mm and some 420mm AIOs with 240mm are no longer sufficient, especially with hotter chips like yours.
Maybe so. But truthfully, it’s unlikely to matter much. You’ll need to replace the CPU before it actually matters. Make sure your mounting pressure and thermal paste are correct. Avoid running at TJmax during CS2, even with a 240mm AIO. As noted, I keep my AK620 at a steady 30% fan speed, which provides sufficient cooling. I also boost my CPU to 5.6Ghz overclock, increasing from the stock 5.2Ghz.
