Account of a peculiar CPU problem This tale follows an unusual malfunction experienced with a central processing unit.
I experienced an unusual event over the weekend that I eventually managed to fix. It makes me wonder whether using motherboard software is a wise choice. I observed that several games I play suffered a significant drop in frames per second, usually staying between 100 and 144 FPS at high settings and 1440p resolution. Even lowering graphics settings to Low or 720p didn’t improve the situation. Since I hadn’t made any recent adjustments, I was unsure what was causing it. I began looking closer and found that all games were forcing my CPU to operate at full capacity while the GPU remained idle. After restarting and power cycling the machine, the problem persisted. As I investigated further, I discovered that even with the CPU at 100%, temperatures stayed extremely low. I also noticed the cores ran at 2.2 GHz and the voltage was incorrect. Despite these findings, I had previously opened the ASUS software (which honestly seems unreliable) and confirmed everything was set correctly—except for an inaccurate current speed setting. I used it to manually switch the system into Ecco mode and then back to Performance mode. From the software’s perspective, nothing changed, yet the issue disappeared. This leads me to question why I’m running that ASUS program. Generally, I trust Windows’ CPU power management more than hardware manufacturers’ tools. I thought ASUS might handle the motherboard more finely, but that doesn’t guarantee optimal performance. Perhaps it would be better to disable the software and rely on firmware’s default behavior. My setup (though not something I usually share) is: Motherboard – ASUS PRIME X470-PRO CPU – 2700X GPU – RTX 2070 Super.
