Access to folders under control on Windows 10?
Access to folders under control on Windows 10?
Hi everyone, I'm currently running Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 with the newest updates, and everything is working smoothly. Recently, I encountered some issues with "Controlled Folder Access." This feature usually prevents unauthorized modifications or ransomware attacks, but lately it's been causing problems for me. It often blocks things without any clear reason. Since I use my PC mainly for gaming, here are a couple of examples:
1. While using MSI AfterBurner to track hardware temperature and usage during games, I get a notification saying "Controlled Folder Access blocked MSI AfterBurner from making changes." When I click to view details, I see only the standard settings page for the controlled access folder—no changes appear.
2. During gameplay, it sometimes blocks the game itself, causing it to crash or terminate unexpectedly. I have to restart it, and in other cases, it prevents saving progress, though the game keeps running but without saving any data. When I close and reopen the game, I notice the same message appears again: "Controlled folder access blocked 'GameName.exe' from making changes."
This is really frustrating. I don’t want to disable this feature because I’m worried about potential security risks, especially with my games and personal files. I also have limited internet speed in my country, so any interruptions during gaming are inconvenient. I’d really appreciate any advice or help you can provide. Apologies for the unclear English—I tried my best but it’s hard to express myself clearly. Thank you!
Shakespeare once mentioned armor "which scalds with safety." It’s about protective measures. You can remove or keep your armor on. If you need just a slight adjustment, you should locate the folders the game uses and manage their access to let programs modify them. This might be somewhat inconvenient, though, because if an attack could exploit those folders, it could lead to problems.
