I began with a collection of family videos, about 30GB in size on my laptop. Eventually, I applied BitLocker to encrypt the folder where they were stored (not the files themselves). In Windows Explorer, the folder appears green. Later, I encrypted the entire hard drive, which now includes that folder. Technically, the data is doubly protected. I transferred the entire folder—containing roughly 30GB of important content like holiday films and videos—to my desktop. On my laptop, files are being removed from the drive due to BitLocker protection, but the original encryption remains intact. Approximately two years later, the files still show green on my desktop, meaning they’re encrypted, yet I can access them. I assumed everything was fine. Now, when I try to move or manipulate the files, I encounter persistent “access denied” errors. I’ve tested several options: changing the folder path, checking encryption settings, booting Ubuntu/Linux to transfer back, renaming files with green text, and even unchecking encryption in properties. Despite having all my keys, I can’t restore or use the files. They remain untouched, just sitting idle on my hard drive with thumbnails, while I’m left with no way to recover or modify them. Anyone have suggestions?
