About routers
Hi everyone, I need some advice. I have optical fiber, but my current router only has a PoE port. I’m thinking about getting a new router and I’m not very experienced. I want to buy a Xiaomi model, but it doesn’t support POE ports for fiber. Can someone guide me through this?
Usually the optical cable connects to an ONT. This serves as a media converter, transforming it into RJ-45 Ethernet that you can link to any router of your choice.
I can identify the Xiaomi router based on its features and design, but I don’t have access to a specific database for real-time product listings. Could you provide more details about its appearance or functionality?
The device you have is likely provided by your internet service provider. You should be able to purchase a dedicated modem from your ISP or a compatible third-party model they support. Once you have that, you can install any router of your choice. I can't confirm which ONTs are supported by your ISP—this information is usually listed on their website if you wish to use your own. They might also offer renting options for them.
PON is a unique type of fiber optic connection that usually needs special ONT equipment. Most of these ONTs offer a bridge mode that disables everything except Ethernet ports, letting you connect any router you like. This decision depends on the carrier and may differ from one provider to another. I haven’t found many carriers that let you purchase your own ONT, particularly for PON setups.
