I understand this isn't meant for Reddit and I don't expect people to judge. Please refrain from asking "why would you overclock a laptop?" or similar questions.
This conversation isn't really about uncovering a root cause or fixing the overclock, but rather about explaining why my observations are what they are.
This is the machine I'm using, the main change being 12GB of RAM added.
I managed a small overclock by pushing the processor beyond its power limit, though I'm unsure of the exact margin. I'm accustomed to adjusting settings in BIOS or XTU, but here I was relying on a GitHub application (possibly Universal x86). I don't have a license for HWInfo for this device, so I didn't perform the usual checks on temperatures and speeds.
I also tried Afterburner, which provided some noticeable improvements.
Despite this, everything remained stable after several stress tests.
When I rechecked MK1 (just one game, not highly optimized but still relevant), I noticed a significant drop to 5 frames per second. That might not seem much, but on a 1650 it's the gap between 55fps and 60fps before overclocking.
What factors could be influencing these results? I'm not familiar with AMD CPUs or laptop overclocking, since most of these features aren't fully customizable in BIOS.
Normal. I was using a free version before and after, and the temperatures were well below anything to worry about.
I ran into some strange issues with my other "good" laptop and spent too much time because of Passmarks software. That laptop, though, gave me weird results while testing RAM. I think I'm being told by a greater power to stick to desktops.
If your laptop is overheating and throttling, consider lowering its voltage. You might also try turning off throttling or increasing the GPU temperature limit to 100°C. The GPU provides a better gaming experience compared to the CPU.
One is an 8GB and one 4GB. Both are the same brand and sub model and both are single rank. It's what I had lying around that I was willing to "sacrifice" for this laptop. Its going be solely be for MK1 for my brothers who don't have a PC or Xbox Series and after showing them the poo-poo Switch port they were going to initially get.
So in short, just doing this as a kind gesture which is why I'm not overly concerned about the actual reason for the odd results I've encountered.
As for HWInfo, unless something changed there were values the free version didn't show that the Pro did. Maybe I incorrectly associated those missing features to needing a license to use it.
My and I use this loosely, Good laptop had questionable results overclocking. I didn't look too much at the modules as much as I did just jumping straight into the OC. My matched 2x16 (32GB) kit is 3200, anything above that performance degrades, guess I lost the lottery on those. My 2x32 (64GB) kit that was 2933, must have won the lottery on those, went up to 3200 and actually outperforms the JEDEC specd 3200 RAM in a few tests. I dunno. I don't know enough about the workings and not pickyness of laptops to make an educated this or that out of it.
