Hi everyone,

I set up an HTPC a few years back and haven’t used it much. I decided to try GeForce Now, thinking it could meet my needs. I installed Windows 10 smoothly, updated the motherboard BIOS and drivers to the latest versions. GeForce Now worked fine again, including Rainbow Six Siege.

Occasionally, during gameplay, the internet speed would drop a lot. I ran some speed tests on regular sites like speedtest.net, fast.com, dslreport, and big file downloads. The results showed speeds never exceeding 100-140 Mbps on a Cat 5e connection, which is half of the 250 Mbps max. Other systems achieved higher speeds.

After testing, I noticed the CPU would hit 100% during startup tests but not during downloads. I also did a DOS-based speed test, which reached up to 250 Mbps without affecting CPU usage.

However, I’m puzzled by the CPU spikes during web-based speed tests and the unusual CPU behavior in Task Manager. The usage numbers don’t add up, which is confusing. In idle mode, the CPU stays between 60-70%, but jumps to under 10% only when typing. During speed tests, it peaks again at full capacity.

I’m unsure why this happens. The system seems to boot normally overall, but something strange is affecting the CPU. It’s possible it’s related to being an APU. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hey, it seems this person works with GeForceNow. Is the setup just one DDR3/1600 at 4GB? If you have another unit, connect it too—dual-channel is important for an APU. You might also try overclocking the memory. The 1866 chipset should work out of the box with these units, and you could boost the vdimm to 1.55 or 1.6v.

Also, notice how Windows behaves when the CPU is at 70%. You’ll likely see the hard disk or SSD being used, possibly due to indexing or scan operations from Windows and antivirus software. Settings for Windows search might restrict indexing.

Furthermore, Windows starts collecting telemetry data right away. It could be useful to use a tool that blocks these unnecessary services.

Confirming thanks!
You’re seeing a peak at these suggestions. It’s running at 1 dimm and you need another for testing. While the CPU stays around 90%, the stream quality is dropping noticeably, suggesting it can’t handle full data transfer. Do you know what the system does during speed tests that causes it to jump to 100%? That happens consistently.

There is a more suitable tool than taskmanager for monitoring the CPU, such as CPU Thermometer. Concerning the stream, it might be due to a driver problem. This Snappy Driver Installer can locate and install the required drivers.
