ISPs in the US are launching 3Gb fiber in certain regions, making it an ideal moment to upgrade to a 2.5 Gbe network or switch. My own investigation revealed that routers can be quite confusing. A helpful video helped me separate the real networking information from marketing hype.

2.5Gbe represents an unusual middle step. I plan to design everything for 10Gbe, which is now quite practical for the usual device count requiring that much speed, and allow the system to automatically adjust between 1, 2.5, or 5Gbps.

It would be nearly identical to standard Gigabit cabling. (That’s fine!) A beginner’s guide to low-voltage wiring for homes, featuring Jake, Anthony, and/or Brian the Electrician, could easily become a mini-series.

For a 10GbE connection, you can achieve 2.5GbE performance using a 2.5GbE setup, but upgrading to 10GbE allows you to use it directly without additional wiring. The 2.5GbE version would sound and be set up similarly to the bass version.

The issue is that 10Gbit is more affordable when you buy used switches, particularly if you have a rack setup. However, older models can't handle multi-gig speeds. The chip shortage has also led to supply problems for newer high-speed gear. It might not be the ideal moment to go ahead with this.

10 gig enterprise equipment is very affordable, particularly on the second-hand side. Refurbished 10 gig DAC cables cost roughly the same as Cat6. 10GBASE-T SFPs are somewhat pricier, yet multimode SFPs are nearly inexpensive.

More similar to 5 Gbps. AT&T provides 5 Gbps for less than $200. Comcast opts for a monthly fee of $300 for 3 Gbps Fiber, plus $500 for installation and another $500 for activation. It seems AT&T mainly targets Comcast with this offer.
