A solid CPU ideal for constructing a custom loop around
I mostly play games that rely more on the CPU. I’m thinking about getting a 2080ti or possibly a new AMD or Nvidia GPU when they drop at a similar price. Right now, I’m aiming for a used/open box with a founders edition and water cooling. My priority is keeping the CPU under $600 without going for a very cheap option. I notice Ryzen chips have more cores but slower speeds compared to Intel, but I haven’t overclocked one yet. I’m unsure if a Ryzen 9 3900X or a 10900K would fit well in my setup.
Consider a 10900k if you're focused on gaming; it may be expensive for the CPU and motherboard, but it could improve performance in games.
The 10600k isn't logical—its single-thread speed is below a 3600, it has less cache, and you need a Z490 board. The only real reason to consider a tenth generation is the i9.
For next-gen AMD or NVIDIA GPUs, pair them with a next-gen AMD CPU for optimal performance. The R7 4800X fits well with these specs. On AMD systems, aim for at least the 3000 series unless you're an advanced overclocker (like with CCX). Simply disable EDC, TDC, and PPT limits so the CPU can run at its highest possible frequency using the best voltage. Custom builds may outperform AIO setups. For Intel, standard overclocking applies. If you want a CPU right away, an Intel 10th gen I7 will deliver strong gaming results.
I won’t invest in custom water cooling for an i5. After the recent upgrade with the 5820K, I’m leaning toward overspending just enough to exceed value. If I had a tighter budget or no strict plans, I’d consider an i5 and opt for a 3700X instead.
I’d prefer something that stays consistent most of the time. I’ve noticed some custom loops can be tricky to manage. EXCEPT when it suits your style. Then opt for the highest-end CPU available so you’re pushed to upgrade faster and keep improving your loop sooner.
It's 10900K, isn't it? It offers the best FPS compared to any other CPU. Or hold off until the next generation Ryzen releases to check if AMD claims the gaming title.
I don’t rely on upcoming CPU or GPU options, which is why I didn’t choose the one I’m considering. I intend to purchase it before October. I prefer the i9 over the i7 because of its higher boost clock and more cores. I aim to maintain this setup for at least five years.
