This was a relative who used to play COD on Xbox 360. I allowed him to try Titanfall and even on my 10-year-old POS monitor, he was amazed by the graphics. I told him he hadn’t seen much yet (BF4 and Crysis 3 look better). Here’s the next part: he’s considering buying a £10,000 gaming system. He was actually serious about it since he wanted to start big (being a doctor, I’m not surprised). And yes, I wasn’t being snobby just because I said “all hail the PC Master Race.” He decided what to do after that. What do you think?
Tell him to avoid investing 10,000 and focus on creating a more sensible, lower-cost solution (like 2,980s, 4790k, Kraken X61, etc.). Then, in a few years, work together to develop a powerful, fully custom loop.
He aims for a comprehensive solution featuring X99 and extra accessories, all fitting within his financial limits.
One of our missionaries converted somebody to the PCMR. That's not something that happens often.
He doesn’t require much money to create something impressive, you’re only considered a genuine PC user if you assist in building the most value for your budget. A solid i7 4790k, a couple of 970s, a spacious SSD, a 1440p screen, and the ROG Swift would be perfect.
Subtly, I didn’t initiate any console VS PC battles; instead, I shared solid information and let him enjoy Titanfall.
That works well now. Your goal is to teach him how to choose wisely so he avoids buying extra parts that aren't needed. Begin with a solid setup—don’t overspend unless you’re confident in the specs. Unless you’re using top-tier components like 4TB SSDs, 32GB RAM, and a powerful 5960X processor, stick to essentials. Avoid spending £10,000 unless absolutely necessary.
I might go dark and hand him my rig—something he’s been watching me build, asking him to send the cash for a custom watercooled setup (5960X, quad 980s).
