I’m considering building a new computer soon and wondered if I could use the Windows product key from my old Lenovo G700 laptop. It was probably running Windows 8 or 8.1, but I’m not entirely sure. I searched online but didn’t find a clear solution, so I’m reaching out to you all for advice on this matter.

The laptop was upgraded to Windows 10. Checking in with a Microsoft account on both devices and mentioning the hardware change could resolve the issue. If that doesn’t help, you might try the automatic Microsoft hotline for key transfers, though this often doesn’t succeed. I’ve also managed to transfer the W10 license using the first method, which worked well for me.

It's about the upgrade itself, not the version. Windows 10 is a significant step forward in terms of features and security.

Upgrade to W10 or log in? The update will enable the login option for you.

They usually come with original manufacturer licenses, not store-bought ones, which means it’s unlikely you can transfer them to another device.
