Firewall, security, intrusion detection, virtual networks, managing your wifi signals, securing your local network. The list goes on. You effectively have no security between the internet and your network if you are connected from the modem to your switch. A network switch is not traditionally designed to handle security tasks. The items I listed above are a few of the items that an intermediate box manages for your network. Consider the UDM like your LAN management device. The cutesy features the UDM pro adds are very nice upgrades though.. NVR, POE, 2.5 Gbps WAN port

We're unsure if this matches our expectations. The system shows a cylindrical model with an access point, labeled 'UDM'. Is that the correct version we're discussing?

I believe we're discussing the main text in clear black font above it. Not the small code snippet with high opacity. I agree you're right. Usually, people who mention the "udm" are referring to SE or Pro models (or the newer box). Even the Op references the pro version in his original post.

I meant to discuss the box with the equipment, not just the small router part. I should have been clearer.

People often struggle to tell the names apart, so using model numbers is simpler. On forums like /r/unifi, discussions focus heavily on these numbers. It’s hard to separate the 20 different AP models. What counts as the 'ultra' version? The user mentioned they’re not using the Pro edition, but since the conversation involves PoE, I assume they mean the Special Edition (UDM-SE).

As noted before, you'll still require wireless access points. Right now, Wi-Fi 6 APs are widely available.

You're asking about handling your network gear and why we're focusing on Unifi equipment. It seems confusing since their interface isn't clearly the main reason for choosing them, especially without a console device. You want to know how to update the Wi-Fi network settings like SSID and password. While you're right that dedicated management tools aren't always required, it looks like Unifi APs don't support this feature. Are you looking for an alternative brand or method?

Also, is there a Unifi server active on a computer within your network? Could it be that this explains why you don’t require a middle device between your modem and switch?

I wasn’t aware I required an intermediary device to modify my Wi-Fi name and password. I intend to purchase an UDM just to confirm it was necessary. Currently, with my ISP, there’s nothing connecting me to my switch.
