Generally, you tend to find lower voltages at the same clock speeds by lowering temperatures. The main problem is that CPUs don't all overclock equally, so makers need to consider this when designing voltage ranges.

10600k requires only the 10 core components so far; the extra 4pin isn't necessary. However, auto voltage is risky—it can be set too low leading to instability or too high causing overheating and potential CPU damage.

Consider testing at 5.0GHz on a lower voltage configuration instead of the default. Be cautious if you make mistakes, and a CMOS reset might also resolve the issue.

Currently I'm using an i5 3550 with a 4GHz overclock, voltage set to auto. The highest temperature I reached during rendering was 65°C, and it never exceeded that limit under any conditions.

The additional 4-pin isn't necessary unless you're targeting very high frequencies like 5GHz+ on the i9-10900K or pushing 6GHz+ with the i7-10700K using liquid nitrogen cooling. The existing single 8-pin can handle up to 384W. Avoid leaving voltages on Auto, as it might be too high and risk damage, particularly when overclocking. If you manage to run at 5.0/5.1 GHz on lower voltage, that's ideal. When overclocking, aim for the minimum voltage possible.

You can't boost the 3550 unless you're referring to the 3570k. A 4GHz clock speed is a shame on Ivy Bridge, but 4.5GHz remains quite safe, especially for newer models that haven't suffered performance drops over time.
