I have a watercooled 7800X with all cores at 4.2GHZ. I run ONYX RIP, Adobe Creative Suite, and play games like BFV, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and soon Red Dead Redemption II. I also own an RTX 2080TI. Recently, I purchased an X570 MB and a 3800X to swap in for the i7-3820 in a work computer that mainly handles MIS tasks and Adobe Indesign. It’s not overly demanding.

I’m thinking about upgrading my 7800X to the 3800X and moving my 7800X to the 3820. My main worry is that my 7800X has Quad Channel memory, more slots, and a passive cooling chipset. I don’t want to risk having to swap two MBs if the 3800X doesn’t match my current performance.

The 3800X looks quite strong, likely offering eight cores running at 4000-4200 MHz or more, which should surpass your older 7800X even when overclocked. The impact on work applications remains uncertain. (For gaming purposes, it's similar to a solid 8700K performance, making it a decent choice overall.)
