I received an email from my internet provider saying I’ll get 5G in one year. They gave me the same deal as now plus a ZTE MC801A router for an extra $5 a month, locked in for 24 months. Basically, pay $120 for a $300 router that stays with them for two years. My old router is almost four years old, and I was thinking about this offer. Should I take it? My worries are: if prices rise when 5G launches, it might be worth it. But will 5G routers improve so much in a year? Also, I don’t want to spend $300 for a router just before Christmas. What do you think?

Are you currently using a 4G router? If you’re able to get 5G, it makes no sense not to try it.

I didn’t just reply—you’re in Sweden and your mom isn’t interested in upgrading your modem or router? Try resetting your current one each day, use a timed power switch, and you’ll be okay until 5G arrives. You’ve got a year to wait.

It's unlikely they won't try to provide this again once 5G becomes available. I wouldn't rely on companies promising availability within a year; such schedules are seldom accurate. However, if your existing 4G router is outdated or low-end, a newer 5G model might still offer better performance even on 4G, making it potentially worthwhile. Without specific details about your current and new devices, we can't determine this definitively.

The B535 works with LTE CAT7 while the MC801A operates on LTE CAT22. I’m unsure about the capabilities of your nearby cell tower and whether these specifications actually matter in practice.
