Hi everyone, I'm trying to assist a friend with their 5800X3D. They mentioned the system would shut down often and noticed overheating thanks to the cooler on it. My friend installed a Noctua NH-D15S cooler, which seems to be helping, but during stress tests (like Prime95), temperatures reached over 90°C. Hwinfo64 didn't indicate thermal throttling, but I was curious if such high temps were typical for this model. I thought it might be useful to get an opinion from someone experienced in the community before deciding. Cheers!

Prime95 really stresses the CPU even when compared to rendering tasks. The elevated temperatures here are typical. 5800X3D is a hot chip, reaching 70-80°C during intense gaming—still manageable with an NH-D15S, though it’s a bit higher than expected for such a cooler. What matters most are the fan speed and case airflow.

Sure, the PC is housed in a compact case with two 280mm fans positioned at the front to efficiently circulate air. Temperatures are noticeably higher than typical expectations for such a setup. How do you usually experience performance under those conditions?

That's a solid setup! You're using the standard torrent stream. Does your friend have a rear fan included in the torrent to aid airflow? I'd estimate around 5°C cooler overall, but I'm aware that the D15S might not perform as well with a dual fan NH-D15 setup. However, with a high fan speed it's still fine. Temperatures between 70-80°C during gaming are completely normal and shouldn't cause any issues. The CPU will handle the workload fully within that range, maintaining smooth performance without any concerns.

Yeah, I also have the full size Torrent and they are great! Also, no, there is no rear fan on the case, just the 2 big front ones and the one on the cooler itself. I forgot to answer your question about the fan speed on the CPU, I think I saw the CPU fan speed hitting like 1400-1500 (which I think is the limit of that fan) so it is putting in work. But yeah I just want to ensure that I can hand the machine back to my friend and have them have no further issues to do with cooling lol

Incorporating a solid rear fan would enhance cooling efficiency by removing warm air from the CPU cooler. Its proximity to the NH-D15S makes it function almost like an auxiliary fan. I considered installing a reliable rear fan. I installed 'Be quiet! Silent Wings 4 Pro,' which can spin at high speeds while remaining very quiet. They are, though, quite costly. You might maintain similar temperatures and reduce fan speed on the NH-D15S to minimize noise. In short, this setup is safe—your CPU stays well within safe operating limits during gaming. No issues at all.

D15S wasn't the most economical option—it was around $120 with just a single fan. You should return it and get a Thermalright Peerless Assassin or Phantom Spirit, which are about $40 each. Pairing that with a 140mm Arctic P14 for the rear ($10) would improve airflow significantly. The older 3D chips before the 9800X model tend to overheat due to stacked 3D cache beneath the CPU die; they stay hot during full load, which is normal, but gaming performance will be noticeably cooler—around 20°C less.

This setup is typical for a 5800x3D. The 3D VCache causes some thermal issues, but 70-80 in gaming is still within the expected range.

At 145 watts it's reaching 80°C.

He chose this path because of the RAM options available. Very tall dimming settings would have caused the second fan to activate.
