I’m diving into my scattered CPUs and got a mix of old and new. I worked on the non-soldered ones first, then tackled the soldered ones—mostly Pentium 4s and Core 2 Duos. I finally tackled an LGA 1156 i5 750, heated it up with a blowtorch to 170°C, twisted the vice, and... well, surprise! The IHS popped off easily. It didn’t look like the heat broke the bond on the PCB side, but it fell out in a way that made me think. Intel, you really know how to keep up with the game. I remember those basic celerons weren’t soldered, but now I’m questioning everything else. High-end Sandy Bridge and earlier models were soldered too—maybe only the K series and top variants? I’m thinking about stocking more chips and building a thermal database. This was a bit of a shock, but hey, I’m learning!

I understand the premium Intel Sandy Bridge model was assembled. It’s a bit surprising, but I had to mention it. Also, there’s a cool discovery here.

Yeah, all the high end stuff has been soldered, Sandy and Ivy E, Haswel and broadwell E, but I thought all of these older chips where soldered. It explains why the old owner lapped the IHS, he must have though the bad temps was an IHS imperfection.

The 750 seems to be soldered, but double-check with your friend. Also, note any temperature changes during testing.

The i5 750 is not soldered, allowing it to be removed easily, though its large die requires caution to avoid damage.

I opted for a vice, but I'm decent at breaking free from it since I've practiced a lot.

Back in the old days, they probably only soldered i7s or even just the XTREEEEEM versions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the side that holds it in the socket is the one with the two small feet.

I opted for the other sides, the slightly flatter ones.
