so i have an RTX2080 and a fairly old Samsung 4K monitor. when playing Final Fantasy 14, i set it to 1440p because I don’t notice much difference between 4K and 1440p. last weekend, i found something about my setup. it’s possible my D.port cable is 1.2, maybe my monitor uses D.Port1.2 and the 4K is connected via HDMI. i’m wondering if this could explain why I don’t see a difference—maybe because of an old cable or since my monitor is 1.2. i don’t see any problems when switching to 4K, just that it looks the same as 1440p.

i think my monitor is from 2014, which is before D.port 1.4, so maybe the 4K display is actually through HDMI.

The difference between 1440p and 4K isn't significant at first glance. So what exactly are you asking?

No, the cables won't influence the image quality.

Could this be related to your monitor?

DisplayPort 1.2 provides sufficient bandwidth for 4K at 60Hz. The lack of noticeable difference in games at this resolution is mainly due to textures not being optimized for 4K, and many 2D elements remain static graphics that don't scale properly. FFXIV is no exception, as it was originally built for the PS3 and still carries some of those limitations.

So I guess it's just me expecting more, but there wasn't much more. I thought I should notice a difference between the two, but when I didn't see one, I thought it was my own reaction. And seeing an ad for a 4K D-port cable made me wonder if my hardware was preventing me from seeing any changes.
