£400 Laptop for University Use – Used, Refurbished or New
Hey!
Looking for a daily runner laptop around £400, preferably smaller (13 inch), suitable for university work. As a chemist, my tasks are mainly Excel, Word, PDF, and lots of Chrome tabs. No gaming needed—just a reliable machine. Any suggestions, used, refurbished, or new?

The current $400 laptop space mainly features mediocre devices lacking that essential 'just this or just that' quality. To maintain affordable pricing across storage, memory, features, or build quality, some compromises are unavoidable. In such cases, I aim to find a used or refurbished unit comparable to the 8th generation Intel or 2xxx AMD models from earlier generations, preferably from higher-tier lines. Often choosing a B grade provides a solid balance between cost and existing wear, which is usually not significant. It’s important to review the seller’s feedback and product reviews to gauge other buyers’ experiences. Be prepared for the battery to be in subpar condition, as this is typical for this price range. Before buying, verify availability, pricing, and the ease of swapping the battery if possible.
