I recently received two additional sticks and wondered if I could reinstall the older 2 x 2 GB DDR3 unit to boost total memory. The motherboard has 2 x 4 GB DDR3 slots, and I’m checking if placing the original 2 x 2 GB DDR3 will function properly. Would it all work together?

You'll retain dual channel functionality and gain two dimmers for each channel.

It would still count as important which RAM type fits in the 2 and 4 slots.
