I placed an order for a 3970x (used) from eBay, but what I received seems to be a prototype chip. It lacks the Threadripper logo and the 3970x marking, instead showing some random alphanumeric text like 100-000000011-11, which looks like sample chips used for testing. Should I be concerned it’s just a sample? From what I understand, the maximum stock clock speed was 4.3 GHz instead of the 3970x’s 4.5 GHz. Anyone have an example that matches those speeds? I saw articles suggesting these appear to be close to the final product. Does that mean this chip is inferior? Also, are there any worries about its reliability? I think these sample chips were pushed hard for testing purposes. Would anyone have any advice? It would help to know whether I should return it and pay the extra $300 for a genuine unit or if this is just a copy without branding. Thanks in advance!

If it's a test chip, that's quite remarkable. Have you tested it? It could just be an entry-level chip with the IHS sanded and re-engraved (this is common with Zen chips recently). If it's a sample, kindly share a CPU-Z screenshot.

Connect it and turn it on to observe the data it provides, likely an older AM4 CPU with its details removed.

It might be the correct socket. Check the numbers on wikichip.

Sorry, it didn<|pad|> page didn't surface anything relevant. The only reference that pops up on Google is 100-000000011-11, which mainly relates to leaked third-gen thread cracker numbers. It seems like you're likely going to pay extra for an official 3970x version, at least to secure a warranty. Thanks for your support!
