I chose to enhance my older 5-year-old i5 6500 system built back in my teens. Despite spending a lot of time online researching and reading reviews, I haven’t found a clear choice for a new CPU. My setup is mostly used for gaming—especially VR—and occasionally for creative projects. My budget supports up to the 3900x, but if it won’t offer much advantage, I’d prefer to invest in something else, like a custom loop cooling solution. I know the 3900x isn’t much better than the 3800x or 3700x in terms of gaming performance, but would any of you recommend one over the others? Thanks ahead!

You'd prefer the 3900x over a custom loop cooled at 3700x if you're going to spend the money.

You own a GTX 1060 and intend to upgrade to a 30-series card in the future.

On some of those CPUs there will be a significant slowdown, so you likely won’t notice much change. The 30 series chips might not arrive soon due to the coronavirus situation, so consider getting a 3900x and an RTX 2080 or Ti, or if possible, wait for the 30 series release (possibly later this year or next year).
