I selected a CPU and motherboard combo for my 13-year-old nephew. I found two options: B450 with 3300X or B460 with 10400F. Both are roughly the same price in Sweden. The B450 board costs between 100-110 euros, while the 3300X is 159 euros. The B460 board is 100-110 euros and the 10400F is 149 euros. For gaming at 1080p, I plan to use the PC for titles like Fortnite or CS:GO. I’ll pair it with an Intel 1660ti, which is the best GPU I could find within budget. From my experience, the 3300X and 10400F perform similarly in games, with a small edge to Intel sometimes and Ryzen at other times. Since the 3600 is too expensive (220 euros), I’m leaning toward the 10400F for its better performance profile.
When using a B460 motherboard, the i5-10400F supports only DDR4-2666. When paired with a Ryzen 3300X running DDR4-3200+, the Ryzen will surpass the i5-10400F. In specific scenarios, such as games where the Intel CPU maintains a slight edge, the difference can be minimal—around 0 to 5 frames per second.
Important: The i5-10400F "Stock" performance occurs with a Z490 board, allowing manual overclocking to DDR4-3200 CL14. All tested CPUs are using the same DDR4-3200 CL14 with custom settings.
I've reviewed that test from GN and realized the limited memory rate would affect the 10400F. All B460 motherboards I've checked are listed for 2933mhz RAM, so I thought applying XMP might achieve that. The specs for a Gigabyte B460M D3H show this. After reviewing a bit, only i7 and i9 (non-K) chips like 10700 and 10900 can reach 2933mhz. I'm having to think more carefully. Stock availability is also important, and the 3300X is currently out of stock.
It seems the target is 3300x, but it hasn’t been available recently. If you’re familiar with building an AM4 setup, go for it. It offers durability compared to Intel and includes features like overclocking on a budget board. Confirm whether the B450 supports Ryzen 5000, as some models may not.
I agree, the AM4 platform is generally superior. The 3300X has been out of stock in my area since May 2020. I’m not sure about you, but if availability is an issue, it’s become a plus with Intel’s 10th generation lately.
