32 or 64 in linux
It was raised in a Linux user group with no responses. Should you run a 32-bit OS with less than 2 or 3Gb RAM? Also, does it make sense to use a 32-bit VM on a 64-bit host when you have 1 or 2Gb RAM? The discussion stems from concerns that certain applications require much more memory on a 64-bit system.
Prefer to use a 64-bit version if your CPU supports it, no matter the RAM size. Just because you require 64-bit processing for more than 4 GB doesn't mean you should stick with a 32-bit system that has less than 4 GB. I tested 64-bit on a 2 GB machine several years ago, around nine years back.
It generally doesn't matter much. I've tried several programs with 32 and 64-bit versions, and they rarely need extra memory just because they're 64-bit. I tested it in: Photoshop CS5.5 Firefox and Waterfox (64-bit Firefox), IE 8, 10, and 11, along with various Java versions and other software I haven't used in over a year.
