The operating system is restricting you to 4GB of RAM even though your CPU is 64-bit. Your OS likely enforces this limit regardless of hardware capabilities.

I have an Athlon X2 64 in a server setup, using Ubuntu with a 32-bit operating system. I'm allocating 6GB of RAM, which should work fine for the desktop version.

Ubuntu and other non-Windows systems handle memory differently because they support PAE, letting them utilize more than 4GB even in a 32-bit environment. You can effectively use up to 64GB of RAM with this feature.

Essentially a 32-bit operating system can only detect up to 4GB of RAM. Beyond that it won’t identify any more memory. Right now, there’s no need to use a 32-bit (often called x86) OS unless you’re working with very old hardware.

Is it true that Ubuntu 32-bit supports this version? By rule, 32-bit programs are limited to 32 bits of memory.
