Hello everyone, my name is Drew. I was inspired by linus to start a "tech channel" basically just me buying stuff and yapping about it. I Kinda know computers, but certainly nowhere near as much as probably the most novice among you, so allow me to propose a question. I just got an XPS Tower 8930, i7 9700, z370, 16g ddr4 ram, i slapped my own samsung 970 pro into it rtx 2060 6gb version- single fan-, a 7200 rpm seagate 1TB. Im enjoying the 8 core i7 so far, I 'm not gonna lie, you guys all prolly got i9 9900's overclocked balls to the wall. I don't game much, but as soon as I'm like, not broke, Ill start getting games. Anyway, the question part. This system came with 16 gigs of ddr4 2666 mhz ram sticks. In my infinite wisdom, I just ordered Corsair vengance lpx ddr4 2x8 gig sticks @ 3000mhz. Even though the i7 is supposed to only use it @ 2666, will I have any serious issues? If so I plan to only use the corsairs till i get more corsairs. What do you gentleman think? P.S. I will not be offended if you call me an idiot. P.P.s, Anyone familiar with the particular build have any better cooling options for me? The arctic freezer 33 that i odered clearly isn't going to fit. Thank you i advance for your time.

You may need to manually verify your RAM speed and clock settings in BIOS prior to starting up. It’s simple enough to reduce performance when things get too fast.
I remember it's been a long time, but I lost track of this. It turns out the Dell XPS 8930 doesn't support the extreme memory profile (XMP), so the Corsair 2x8 sticks I bought—capable of 3000MHz—can't be overclocked in my configuration. I didn’t realize the RAM speed should be prioritized over the listed numbers. Before those Corsair modules, I already had 16GB of 2666MHz RAM and thought the Corsair would downclock to that. That didn’t happen. Instead, the XPS bios reduced all four RAM sticks (two 8GB units with 2666MHz and two 8GB Corsair LPX Vengeance units at 2133MHz) to 2133MHz. For a while, I imagined tossing them away and installing 32GB of 2133MHz RAM, but now I see the issue. Besides a slight slowdown when the CPU loads a program or file, performance isn’t noticeably affected. Boot times stayed the same—10.1 seconds with 16GB at 2666 and 32GB at 2133MHz. So I decided to keep them in until I can afford the right RAM. This experience is a warning for anyone building PCs: always check your RAM’s actual presence before buying. If you can’t overclock and plan to mix RAM types, your system will slow down to its lowest rated speed. Thanks for your help on this forum!
