165hz
165hz
I recently switched from a 60hz monitor to a 165hz one. In my usual FPS games I noticed a noticeable improvement, but in titles with a fixed frame cap like Terraria and Genshin Impact they became more stuttery at 165hz. They seemed smoother on my old 60hz setup. With AMD FreeSync and Windows VRR enabled, are there still ways to make those games feel more fluid? I also tried VSync but it didn’t help. My monitor is an Acer Nitro ED320QR and my PC has a Ryzen 5 3500 and an RX5600X.
I'm experiencing the same problem on my 165Hz monitor. Changing it to 120Hz works fine, but I notice smooth performance only when I disable features like G-Sync and Freesync. It seems enhancing settings such as anti-aliasing cause lag. You might want to turn them all off—check the specific settings if you're unsure.
That’s why many setups struggle at 165fps, but 60 is usually fine or the games cap at 60. 120 offers a solid middle ground—120hz won’t feel laggy even at 60fps. I also didn’t mention setting NVIDIA latency to ultra and VSync to fast; I haven’t had problems with that yet. From what I know, it’s similar to VSync off but doesn’t cause tearing, which hasn’t happened in the games I’ve played, even in fast-paced fighting titles. AMD might handle it similarly, though it’s not essential—it just adds a smoother feel.
