150F power switch?
Hi everyone, I'm an IT manager dealing with a Dell Latitude 7430 issue where the power button and fingerprint reader felt excessively hot—about 150°F. It was uncomfortable to press them. I opened the case but didn’t spot any obvious problems. This hasn’t happened to me before, so I’m not sure if anyone else has faced it. Have you encountered this before?
Is the fingerprint scanner functioning properly? You think there might be an issue with the sensor, but it seems to be drawing a lot of power. There shouldn't be any other components producing such high heat. It looks like only the Wi-Fi card is generating that much warmth.
The device contains a sensor likely positioned near or on the button itself.
It seems like you're trying to figure out what's happening with a capacitive scanner and its wiring. Since you're new to this, it might help to understand how capacitive scanners work and why wires can get crossed up. Let me know if you'd like a clearer explanation!
Most probably the power adapter caused your sensor to fail. As an IT manager, the best choice is to reach out to an authorized service center and bring the laptop with you. If the device has a warranty, they should repair it at no cost. Dell tends to be very supportive with their warranty (typically 2 years). HOWEVER, if they suspect you used a non-Dell product—like an off-brand adapter or docking station—they may refuse your warranty claim and charge you for the service. Being aware of this, they’re likely to blame and charge you for the repair.
