You're evaluating an upgrade path for your gaming rig. Right now you have a 8700k CPU paired with 32GB of DDR4 memory at 3200MHz. You're thinking about swapping to an i5-13600K and considering a DDR4 motherboard to save money by reusing your existing RAM. The concern is how much slower your games will become without moving to DDR5, especially since you plan to upgrade to something like the 4070 or AMD RDNA3 next year. The articles you read likely focus on faster RAM speeds, but they often use higher-end sticks. Your situation involves balancing performance gains against cost savings over time.

You'd be fine, 3200CL16 is good enough, switching to DDR5 RAM will only give you around 5% more performance in memory intensive tasks and game, not really worth it imo Some benchamrks : https://overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_main...howdown/16

I upgraded yesterday from an 8700k to 13600kf with 3200mt cl16 ram. The performance jump is significant, especially at higher resolutions. At 1080p with a 4090, the difference is only about 20 fps compared to 1440p or 4k where other GPUs show much larger gaps. The 3600mt version feels nearly identical due to higher latency in the case. After researching for around six weeks, I found it more cost-effective to go with DDR4 3200mt and 13600kf on a MSI Tomahawk board. It’s really impressive, and I strongly recommend others follow suit from an 8700k—just commit and don’t reconsider later.

It would also be wise to consider an MSI board for the light-load function. It reduced my temperatures by 20-25% while maintaining full performance.

I upgraded recently and am very satisfied! I didn’t locate an MSI board, so I chose an ASUS TUF which offers good value for money. It really boosts performance compared to what I had before. I might need a better case with improved cooling since it’s running a bit hot even with my NH-D15. Thanks for your feedback!

Execute r23 to check the default core settings with hwinfo64. The baseline is around 1.35; adjust the offset to reach approximately 1.2 while lowering temperatures accordingly.

It's referred to as undervolting, correct? I'm going to give it a shot.

Thanks for the advice! I adjusted the offset to about 1.2v and now performance holds steady between 70-79 under load in cinebench. I’ll keep testing for stability and might skip a new case if it works.
